Amongst our staff we have a number of keen sportsmen and women, and there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to try their hand at a range of sporting activities such as Tag Rugby, Rounders, Netball, Football, Athletics, Benchball and Gymnastics, to name but a few. Swimming lessons take place at the local Paradise Pool.
The Government's sporting grant has made diversification possible, facilitating the introduction of a PE specialty for each year-group. New for this year are Karate, to be offered by three-times-European-Champion Nato Ficarra to children in Year 3, and Dance instruction from the Feathers School of Dance for pupils in Year 5. For pupils in Year 6 there is the opportunity to learn how to sail, courtesy of Ely Sailing Club - a fantastic experience! A link with the local Korfball Club is being finalised.
St Mary's is affiliated to the Witchford Schools' Sports Partnership which runs a number of inter-school sports competitions during the course of the academic year. Our teams, coached by PE Leaders, enjoy their competitive matches against pupils from other local schools, as well as the fresh air and exercise, and our after-school sports clubs provide further opportunities for honing sports skills.
The Olympic Legacy funding is also enabling greater participation in competitive sport. Further information about the uses to which the grant is being put is to be found on the Information/Key Documents page.
Sports Day, to which parents and carers are warmly welcomed, is always a lot of fun. During the morning session pupils across the school come together in their House teams – Cawdle, Wicken, Padnal and Sedge – and take part in a carousel of races and sporting activities, earning points for their Houses. The afternoon, at the end of which the House Cup is presented to the House with the most points overall, sees a series of competitive races, with much camaraderie and team support.
